Who we are

The largest Caribbean AI centre built for research, commercialization, policy, and capacity.

The Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre (AIIC), established at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, advances artificial intelligence across research, capacity building, commercialization, policy, governance, and regional transformation. Its work connects foundational AI, applied systems, public-interest innovation, and the institutions needed to ensure AI reflects Caribbean realities.

What we do

AIIC develops theory, systems, prototypes, training pathways, policy frameworks, and commercialization routes for AI that is safe, useful, and regionally grounded.

From lab to regional platform

2018
Intelligent Systems Lab founded

The Intelligent Systems Lab began in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, founded by Dr Craig Ramlal with a small research group of 3 focused on intelligent systems and enabling technologies.

Growth
Research scope widened

The lab expanded from engineering into multidisciplinary AI work, adding policy, governance, social impact, training, commercialization, and sector-facing initiatives.

Today, AIIC supports governments, industries, researchers, students, and communities in adopting AI while lowering barriers to regional innovation and local capability.

Caribbean AI TaskForce

We actively support the CTU-led Caribbean AI TaskForce

We back and are actively involved in the Caribbean AI Taskforce and their process, chaired by our Executive Director.

The Caribbean AI TaskForce is a regional initiative aiming to harmonize AI policy, governance, and capacity across Caribbean states. The TaskForce develops model legislation, fosters cross-sectoral partnerships, and drives the ethical, inclusive AI agenda for the region.

The UN Global AI Capacity Network

The AIIC is formally supporting and actively involved in the establishment and creation of the Global Network of Centres for Exchange and Cooperation on AI Capacity Building.

This initiative aims to bring a close to the AI divide by facilitating coordination and the availability of in-kind contributions from universities, corporations, Member States and other relevant actors, and to undertake a range of other useful activity to build AI capacity, anchored in shared normative commitments.

The CARICOM-UNDP's joint regional AI Programme (2026-2030)

We support and are actively involved in the creation of this programme.

The CARICOM-UNDP's Joint Regional AI Programme (2026-2030) is a joint effort between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to frame a high-level regional AI programme for robust governance, shared standards and strong local capacity. This initiative draws on previous and naturally extends from ongoing AI initiatives in the Caribbean region.

The AIIC's HerSpace in AI

Fostering Involvement in AI through Advocacy, Initiatives and Mentorship

Her Space in AI is a collaborative research, development, advocacy and mentorship community that brings together scholars and technology practitioners across multiple fields.

It functions as an advocacy and mentorship community that brings together scholars and technology practitioners across multiple fields.

Due to the necessity of not only including women in decision-making but of ensuring that women possess the skills to meaningfully contribute to the ongoing AI revolution, the group’s focus will be oriented around initiatives, campaigns and opportunities for capacity building in relation to AI literacy, and other necessary digital skills.

The rationale for the working group is informed by the following thematic areas:

-AI’s Impact on the Lives and Livelihoods of Women
-Necessity of Capacity building

The AIIC's Caribbean AI Transition

Aiding the Caribbean through their AI Transition

Managing the Caribbean AI Transition through talent, development, network and policies. More information coming soon

The AIIC-CRC's Digital Cocoa, Climate & Genomics Accelerator

The AIIC and the CRC have partnered to stand up the Digital Cocoa Climate and Genomics Accelerator, which hosts several projects that merge AI, genetics and climate research. CRC hosts the world largest cocoa gene bank, AIIC hosts the Caribbean's best AI expertise. Work is on the way to build an audit-ready MRV for agroforestry carbon and pathways have been carved out for research into developing drought and disease-resistant varieties.

Toward Advancing Private Sector AI Adoption, Development and Capacity Building

Projects are currently housed within the nine research clusters, each specializing in a distinct area of artificial intelligence and applied innovation. Initiatives that span the centre are housed by the Executive Director's Office. Together, these groups form a portfolio that extends far beyond the traditional boundaries of AI research.
